BORNEO LEGENDS
Dee Char is Malaysian and did not start writing until after she became a mother. She was not very confident with writing at first, as she never thought herself good with words.
But seeing her child’s bookshelf filled with princesses, castles and tales from overseas, she started hunting for local legends.
She took a short course in writing, and months later picked up the pencil and doodled characters for children. So if you see a book character with an overly disproportionate head or an odd skin tone, please forgive her!
1. Dee Char is a pseudonym to a much longer name. Someone told the author that no child can remember her full name (15 letters long!), so she pulled out syllables to form the name Dee Char.
2. Whenever Dee Char tries to swim free-style, she sinks. She can only swim frog-style.
3. As a child, she used to have a phobia with public speaking. She still does.
4. Dee Char’s great grandmother was trained as a Bobolian/Bobohizan, (as a priestess in one of the tribes in Sabah).
5. Dee Char is not very good with songs; she can hardly remember any song title nor their lyrics. But she enjoys listening to quite a number on the radio! And she sings off-tune.
6. Many moons ago, Dee Char was an engineer and punched numbers for companies like Arup and Connell Wagner. She was not very chatty.
7. Dee Char has a twin! And no, it isn’t freaky to say hello to someone who looks like you or sounds like you.
8. Dee Char’s hands get itchy when they are cold. She says she is allergic to winter.
9. She absolutely loves coconut water. She can drink it all day...if possible.
10. She cannot live without rice. In one of her travels, she went 10 days without seeing rice on any menu. She started dreaming of talking rice.
